THE AARP JOURNAL — JAPAN

Population aging is one of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century—and nowhere are the realities of an aging society more visible than in Japan. In our reimagining of AARP International’s prestigious annual printed publication, The Journal, we explored the story of aging in Japan through visual and written narratives.

Working alongside the AARP team, ULTRA helped to plan and guide the editorial direction of The Journal—including the voice and style of the writing, the look and feel of the imagery, and the topics and narrative structure. During three weeks on the ground in Japan, we captured images and content that conveyed a nuanced portrait of a country in flux. The design, including the cover, a meticulously crafted paper sculpture of the Tokyo skyline which we built by hand, was informed by our observations of Japanese art and culture. Video stories rounded out our coverage of the topic and provided a valuable exploration of the human side of aging.
